Detroit River Walleye Charters
The Detroit River is a premier destination for walleye fishing, attracting anglers from across the region, especially during the spring and fall runs. This 32-mile waterway, connecting Lake St. Clair to Lake Erie, is home to abundant walleye, offering opportunities for both novice and seasoned anglers.
The river’s swift current and varied depths provide ideal conditions for jigging, the most popular technique here. Many anglers use 3/4 to 2-ounce jigs tipped with soft plastics or live minnows to target walleye along the bottom. Trolling and casting blade baits are also effective, particularly during pre-spawn and post-spawn periods when the fish are most active. Prime fishing spots include the Trenton Channel, Fighting Island, and the Ambassador Bridge area, but walleye can be found throughout the river. Early morning and late evening often yield the best bites, although the action can remain steady throughout the day, especially during the spring migration. Whether you’re after a trophy fish or a limit of eating-sized walleyes, the Detroit River is a walleye angler’s dream, combining exciting fishing action with the scenic backdrop of the bustling riverfront. Walleye Run TimingMarch - Mid April:
At this time is the best time to get a trophy walleye as they come in from Lake Erie. We would be fishing in shallow water looking for spawning females. Mid April til August: At some point in April and even earlier, millions upon millions of walleye start to come home to the Detroit River. This is a great time to catch tons of walleye jigging soft baits. Early May: This time of year the water starts to warm up and trolling crawler harnesses on the bottom start to fire up. My first experience walleye fishing was on Lake St Clair was when I was 4 reeling in 4 lb walleye non-stop. While growing up in SE Michigan I loved fishing these waters and learning them. He started charter fishing on them in 2015 when he was hired as a Captain for another charter service. Although I live up north, I still live to fish the Detroit River jigging for walleye.
